We are also going to reflect on 1 John, Chapter 5 in God’s Holy Word to give us understanding of how we must constantly move away from all sin so that we can become the Disciples Our Lord needs us to be like Saint Peter and Saint Paul. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+John+5&version=NIV.

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God

5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. ² This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. ³ In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, ⁴ for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. ⁵ Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

⁶ This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. ⁷ For there are three that testify: ⁸ the^[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. ⁹ We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. ¹⁰ Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. ¹¹ And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. ¹² Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Concluding Affirmations

¹³ I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. ¹⁴ This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. ¹⁵ And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

¹⁶ If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. ¹⁷ All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.

¹⁸ We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. ¹⁹ We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. ²⁰ We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

²¹ Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

If we look at verses 6 through 8, we know that Our Lord did not only come by water alone, which is Baptism, but He came by the water and the Precious Blood He shed for our eternal salvation. But, only by all three that we are saved because we must have both the water and the Spirit, and we don’t get the Spirit unless we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who shed His Blood for our sins as expiation for our sins committed against the Father. Therefore, if you are Baptized by the water, but don’t believe this Truth, then you are not saved. If you do believe this Truth, and are Baptized, then you receive the Holy Spirit, who reveals all Truth to you as a child of God, but if you choose sin over God, then you have chosen to ignore the Truth that the Holy Spirit has revealed to you. Therefore, mortal sin, which is eternal death moves you away from the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, and you no longer have the Truth in you, or the Holy Spirit guiding you.

Then in verses 18, St. John speaks of being born of God, one does not continue to sin. Meaning, if you have been given the Truth by the Holy Spirit, you choose to step away from all sin. The “One” who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. This is referring to Our Lord, Jesus Christ, who keeps us safe from sin because we abide in Him. We don’t just acknowledge Him, WE ABIDE IN HIM. Meaning, we receive His Holy Body in the Holy Eucharist in a state of grace, and we continually seek His Holy Face in order to remain away from all sin, but especially the sin that leads to eternal death (Mortal sins). If we ABIDE in Him, then we are given understanding of the Truth and to constantly seek the Truth and seek how to please God continually as His Disciples. So, this is the water (Baptism and belief in the Son of God, who is Jesus Christ), the Holy Spirit, who we are given at Baptism as a gift from God to reveal all TRUTH, and finally, the Precious Blood of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, whom we ABIDE in daily, to be protected from temptations, and continually growing towards His image to be called a child of God. The more we seek to abide in Him, the more Truth is revealed by the Holy Spirit. However, temptations from Satan don’t stop because of concupiscence, which are our tendencies towards sins, and this gift of the Holy Spirit should never be taken for granted and we should never assume we are okay because of our Baptism. Jesus Christ protects us by His Precious Blood as we continually CONVERT ourselves into His image by CONTINUALLY seeking to remove ourselves from all sin by the continual graces given to us by His Holy Spirit.

As a lay Catholic that has been given this understanding relatively recently in the last 7 years or so, I can see now how I was removed from the Truth because of my sins. However, now bringing myself back to being rightly ordered to God by His graces, Truth is being revealed to me again from the graces of the Holy Spirit. There is another specific sin that leads to eternal death and that is blaspheme against the Holy Spirit. Because the Holy Spirit gives us all of the graces we need to keep moving towards Jesus Christ and His image, it should always be on our hearts not to offend Him, as well as God Our Father, and Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Let us Pray – Holy Spirit, please allow us the graces to keep moving towards Our Lord, Jesus Christ, always seeking to please Him and His Divine Will. We need You also, and we are thankful for all of Your Love, and gifts that You have allowed us to receive thus far. If there are any sins we have committed, please bring them to our hearts so that we may repent of these sins, even our venial sins. Holy Spirit, we ask for all of the fruits of the Holy Spirit and gifts we need to become the best Disciples we can be like St. Peter and St. Paul to spread the Gospel to the nations. We need You and cannot do this without You, please let us never to be separated from You and continue to reveal all Truth to us so that we have more understanding of our sins and to keep re-creating us until we are transformed into Our Lord’s image. We ask this also of Our Heavenly Father in the name of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.
